Talking Creators

The State of The Creator Economy 2021

I said it last week and I'll say it again. The creator economy is accelerating at a rapid rate.

Every week there's a new round, company, and feature dedicated to helping creators. However, the current state of the Creator Economy is still in the infrastructure/building phase.

Infrastructure meaning web 2.0 companies are focused on helping creators monetize and easily engage with their fans while web 3.0 companies are more focused on helping creators own their IP, monetize and get discovered in new ways (e.g. creator coins and NFTs), and not fall victim to the favorites game that web 2.0 companies (e.g., TikTok and Instagram) play.

Talking Social & Platforms

Facebook/Instagram Releasing New Tools for Monetization

Say what you want about Big Bucks Zuck (that should be his rap name), but when he's bullish on something he sees it through. When it comes to creators you can tell he's incredibly bullish.

From hosting his first-ever meme event with big-name meme creators to the announcement of the numerous tools being rolled out to help creators.

Here's what's being released

  1. Shops are going to be available for all creators
  2. A marketplace to help creators connect easily with brands
  3. An affiliate model for creators to get a % of the revenue they drive when they recommend products

The name of the game is providing as many ways to help creators make money.

Rally Raises $57M from Community

Rally is one of the many players in the creator coin market. Unlike Bitclout, Rally Coins give fans power over marketing campaigns and key decisions a creator makes.

The company announced that it raised $57M through the Rally community with top creators driving $100k USD weekly.

With the new funds, Rally looks to continue to build ways to support the community in the form of a one-stop-shop for creators to launch their own coins and eco-friendly NFTs.

Spotify Releases New Creator Tools

Spotify like other platforms has remained relatively flat-footed when offering tools to help creators monetize.

With competitors poaching creators (e.g., Clubhouse), the platform looks to roll out more features to help podcast creators monetize. The first being subscriptions where Spotify takes 0% commission.

Sidenote: Spotify has the potential to be a strong and thriving social network; however, they tend to move slow when it comes to product innovation. It'll be interesting to see how far they go to offer solutions for creators.

More on platforms

  • Virtual avatar platform Genies links up with NFTs powerhouse Dapper Labs to create a digital wearables marketplace (use incognito mode to bypass paywall).

In-house (original essays, thoughts and content)

With the advertising industry shifting and influencer marketing budgets growing, brands from all industries are adopting a new playbook. One relying heavily on creators and the distribution accessible through their audiences.

Brand Shift: The New Playbook In The Creator Economy

Gems

  • Let's Talk 50M Paying Users: That's the number of paying customers the Washington Post has for their newly rebranded SaaS platform, ARC XP.
  • Luxury Blockchain: Top fashion houses met to build a blockchain platform with the help of Consensys and Microsoft.
  • Back In Action: Master of None Season 3 (use incognito mode to bypass paywall trailer) is on the way.
  • TV But Make It Live: Livestreaming is here to stay. What does that mean? brands are looking for hosts to help grow their live stream efforts.
