Talking Creators

The FaZe x Crypto Fiasco

Pump dumps are fairly commonplace when it comes to altcoins. Not because crypto is a scam, but like anything involving money, most of these scams revolve around get rick quick scenes preying on the ill-informed. What makes these scams even worse is when they're knowingly and unknowingly cosigned by creators.

Over the past year, we've seen numerous creators support altcoins with some being accused of trying to get rich and others ending getting rugged. The latest of these scandals is eSports giant FaZe role in the BankSocial pump and dump scheme. It's unclear who or if both parties were in the wrong, but what is clear is that both sides are feeling the consequences.

The College Athlete Creator

Previously, college athletes couldn't monetize their brand in any form. Regardless of how much athletes built and grew their brand, the money that was generated went to universities.

Now, after a historical move, the NCAA has ruled that athletes can monetize their name, image, and likeness (NIL). In the days that followed since the announcement, we've already seen landmark deals like Barstool Sports Dave Portnoy signing athletes for his college athlete marketing firm, and Fresno state's Cavinder basketball twins deal with Boost Mobile.

Editors note: the addition of college athletes to the creator economy is a win for both athletes that might not go pro and a new opportunity for companies to help build solutions for this new demographic of creators.

Talking Social & Platforms

Instagram's Pivot

In a not-so-shocking twist, Instagram announced they're no longer a photo-sharing app and that they're making the shift to focus on full-screen video. In translation, Instagram is pivoting to be more like TikTok and YouTube as they look to compete for creators and brand dollars. This news follows the announcement that Instagram is working on a feature akin to Twitter's "Super Follow" to help creators monetize via exclusive stories.
